prEN 12101-11: Horizontal Flow Powered Ventilation Systems for Enclosed Car Parks (Draft)
prEN 12101-11 is the draft European standard for horizontal flow powered ventilation systems in enclosed car parks. It addresses impulse ventilation systems and is currently in development.
prEN 12101-11 is the draft part of the EN 12101 family addressing horizontal flow powered ventilation systems for enclosed car parks: commonly known as impulse ventilation or jet fan systems.
Part of the BS EN 12101 standard family.
The βprENβ prefix indicates this is a provisional European Norm: the standard is still in CENβs development process and has not yet been published. Products cannot currently carry a CE or UKCA mark βagainst EN 12101-11.β
How horizontal flow ventilation works
Traditional car park ventilation uses ducted extract systems. Horizontal flow systems use impulse jet fans distributed across the car park ceiling to direct airflow toward extract points. The approach typically:
- Removes the need for extensive ductwork
- Allows greater architectural and structural flexibility
- Can deliver both day-to-day pollution control and emergency smoke control
- Requires careful CFD modelling and zoning design
What the draft addresses
The draft standard is expected to cover:
- System performance requirements for smoke control and tenability
- Component performance (jet fans, extract fans)
- Integration with fire detection and control systems
- Design verification including CFD modelling guidance
- Commissioning and acceptance testing
- Routine inspection and maintenance
Interim compliance in the UK
Until prEN 12101-11 is published, horizontal flow car park ventilation systems in the UK are typically designed against:
- BS 7346-7: Code of practice on functional recommendations and calculation methods for SHEVS in covered car parks
- CEN/TR 12101-5: calculation methods
- Industry guidance such as BSRIA BG65/2017
- Approved Document B of the Building Regulations
Manufacturer-tested jet fans typically carry data referencing the relevant component standards (BS EN 12101-3 for fans).
Related standards
- BS EN 12101-3: Smoke control fans (jet fans included)
- CEN/TR 12101-5: Calculation methods
- BS 7346-7: UK code of practice for car park ventilation
- BS 9999: Non-residential fire safety design
